Learning Affiliate Marketing for Free - Part 2

learning-affiliate-marketingWe’ve discussed learning affiliate marketing for free before, but it’s a topic that never really gets old.  Today, I wanted to talk about how easy it is to get free copies of internet marketing and affiliate marketing training materials.  Instead of repurposing other content for IM, you’ll be getting the core materials and classes for free.

  • First, recognize that you can’t be as picky.  Not all courses are available for free unless you consider yourself a thief.
  • Become an active member of the affiliate marketing community.  For example, if you are a frequent poster on Warrior Forum, you can frequently get sample copies of new and popular affiliate marketing courses in exchange for a review.
  • Check affiliate marketing blogs for free materials.  Many bloggers build email lists, and they offer outstanding mini-ebooks and reports in exchange for joining their lists.  You can either create a “junk mail” account, or simply unregister as soon as you get each free bonus.
  • Use forums and build your own courses.  Often, you’ll find incredibly generous bloggers or forum  members who write long, detailed posts on specific affiliate marketing topics.  Gather a few together for the topic you’re interested in, and you won’t even need any fancy products to learn the material.

Although there are plenty of affiliates who have spent many thousands (or even hundreds of thousands) of dollars on different products, there’s no need to buy a huge number of affiliate marketing courses.  Limit yourself to those which seem truly useful, and get as much information as you can for free.  It’s all out there for the taking.

Learning Affiliate Marketing: Link Building Tips

learning-affiliate-marketingLearning affiliate marketing is never easy.  That’s why it’s crucial that you learn to focus on small skills in a specific area.  In this case, we’ll talk about link building.  Admittedly, this is a complex topic of its own, but we’re going to focus on the most basic elements that every affiliate should know.

  • Check out your competitors’ links.  Use the Yahoo! Site Explorer or the link: command at Yahoo.com and you can get a great list of up to 1000 of each competitors’ inbound links.  From there, just contact the relevant sites and ask for a link, too.
  • Create content that would be highly linkable. Reference materials are especially good for this.  Just add a useful reference section on another part of your site, then contact quality sites that would be interested in that material.  For example, a section of kid-friendly history resources would be of interest to many schools and libraries.
  • Submit to quality directories. Don’t waste your time on submitting to thousands of directories.  Instead, submit to the quality, human-edited directories and then get on with your life.
  • Comment or create content on social media and blog sites with dofollow links.  Use the SearchStatus plugin to figure out which links are followed and which links are nofollow, then focus your efforts on the sites that do not use nofollow tags.

Any other good linking tips?  It’s a complex area, and there’s always room for more ideas!

Preparing for Learning Affiliate Marketing

learning-affiliate-marketingThere’s plenty of information out there about learning affiliate marketing - probably too much, in fact.  What you rarely hear about, though, is the preparation for getting into affiliate marketing.  Too many people enter the field with insanely high expectations and a huge amount of stress from personal situations - they’re going broke, they can’t pay their bills, they have sick kids, etc.  It’s definitely less than ideal.  While life is never perfect and the ideal never seems to happen, there are steps that you can take prior to throwing yourself into affiliate marketing, and they will make your life much easier.

  • Figure out where you’re wasting time.  We all do it.  Whether it’s watching TV that doesn’t really satisfy us, or playing mindless games on the computer, or just spending too much time on the phone, there’s always a way to cut back on wasted time and make life more efficient.  This isn’t about cutting out all the fun or ruining your relationships; it’s about being conscious of what you’re doing with your time and only using it for things that (a) must be done, (b) get you closer to your goals, or (c) make you deeply and truly happy.  Ask yourself if each activity falls into one of those categories, and if the items that MUST be done can be done any more effectively.
  • Simplify your life. Affiliate marketing takes money before you make money (in most cases, anyway).  Sell off what you don’t need, eliminate as many monthly payments as you can, and cut back expenses wherever possible.  Make sure your entire family is on board.  When you’re not worrying so much about debt, it’s much easier to focus on doing things the right way.
  • Explain what you’re doing. Make sure your family or spouse knows your plan, and understands why you’re doing what you’re doing.  There are enough negative thoughts and influences without your family adding to it.

By actively preparing your life for the challenge of affiliate marketing, you will have a much better chance of succeeding.  Learning affiliate marketing does depend on acquiring knowledge, but it also depends on defeating your own demons.

Learning Affiliate Marketing From EBooks

learning-affiliate-marketingLearning affiliate marketing with ebooks is always a controversial topic.  If you go to any affiliate marketing forum, you’ll see a vocal group of people who think that all ebooks are a rip-off and that no one should buy them.  You’ll also find those who have purchased almost every book on the market.  What you won’t find in most cases, though, is a sane middle ground.

It’s definitely true that most people who buy an ebook will fail to make money based on what they’ve read.  You’ll also find, though, that most people who have taken Algebra at some point will fail to be able to do much more than basic Algebra as an adult.  That doesn’t mean that Algebra is a scam, or that it doesn’t work - it just means that some people like it more, some people are more motivated than others, and some people will just decide that it’s not right for them.  And of course, some people won’t be good enough to succeed at it.  That is true of basically anything.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t study Algebra, or that you shouldn’t buy ebooks.  Take a balanced, rational approach to things and only buy those books which seem very likely to help you.  And remember, also, that most ebooks have a 60-day guarantee.  If you’re terribly dissatisfied with one, you can always ask for your money back.

In short, don’t let the naysayers deter you from buying ebooks to learn affiliate marketing, but don’t become overly addicted, either.  There’s a time to study and a time to put plans into action, and it’s important that you do both if you want to succeed.

Learning Affiliate Marketing From Blogs

learning-affiliate-marketingWhen you’re learning affiliate marketing, there’s a temptation for many of us to stick with guides or ebooks.  Unfortunately, that’s like getting all of your education from textbooks.  It just doesn’t do a good job of providing a comprehensive education.  Just as with anything else, you need to combine your textbook education with real world experience and current news on your topic.  That’s where blogs come in.

Now, before I go any further, let me emphasize that I am not trying to encourage you to overindulge in blogs.  Too much is just as bad as too little.  Action is vital.

Most affiliate blogs can be categorized into a few groups:

  • General Affiliate Talk - These blogs are typically very broad, and they include a combination of personal performance reports, industry drama, and occasional news.  Although they’re usually run by a single affiliate and they’re not always very regular, these can be a great source of sneaky tactics and general updates when something huge happens.
  • Industry News - These blogs are usually written by multiple authors, and they tend to be updated more reliably than more general affiliate blogs.  Often, these blogs are related to industry conferences or magazines with the funding to pay writers.
  • Niche Blogs - These blogs are typically like the more general affiliate blogs, but with a narrower focus.  Often, you can find blogs focusing on SEO, PPV, PPC, or social media.

To maximize your learning without spending too much time, try to choose a mix of blog types.  If you notice a lot of overlap, there’s a good chance that you’re reading too many blogs.  You can also try using an aggregator like AffBuzz.com, where popular posts rise to the top and the remainder can be scanned quickly on a single page.

New Affiliate? Internet Marketing Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating

affiliate-internet-marketingTo a new affiliate, internet marketing can seem incredibly complicated or even impossible to learn.  Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way.  Unless you’re already very familiar with computers and marketing, it will still be a little tough, but there are ways to make the entire process much easier.

  • Choose a specialty and stick with it. Until you have a very solid understanding of your specialization, don’t try to branch out and learn everything.  If you want to do SEO and build free traffic, focus on that.  If you want to do social media, pick a couple of sites and really learn what it takes to succeed there.  Even if you’re not successful, you’ll be simplifying the process of finding what you’re good at.
  • Find a mentor. If you can afford to pay for help from a successful mentor, that’s ideal.  Remember, too, that you’re probably going to need to pay that person for his or her time, not some “percentage of your success after coaching”.  People want to know that you’re serious and successful affiliate get those kinds of offers all the time.  If you don’t have the funds to hire help, get active in a forum of affiliates or find a good coaching forum.  People don’t necessarily have to be successful to help out with a few questions and keep you motivated.
  • Purchase a course in your specialization.  Note that I didn’t say you should buy 20 courses on all different types of internet marketing.  Just figure out the top 1 or 2 courses or ebooks in your chosen area and then read them.
  • Learn to spy on your competition.  Spying on competitors can give you a great idea of what’s working.  Just make sure that you don’t end up spending all your time looking and not enough time actually taking action.

Above all, try not to get discouraged.  It can be extremely frustrating to teach yourself affiliate marketing, especially when your friends and family have no idea what you’re doing on the computer.  It’s all worth it, though, when the checks start showing up in your mailbox.

Don’t Get Discouraged: Learning Affiliate Marketing Can Be Tough

learning-affiliate-marketing-discouragedWhen you start learning affiliate marketing, everything looks great.  The idea of making money from home without a boss is incredible, and the earning potential can make it seem like the answer to all your problems.  You start out feeling excitement about the new life you’re beginning.

Then you hit your first speed bump.  Maybe you start paying for traffic and you don’t see any conversions.  Maybe you create a page that you feel is perfectly optimized and Google never gets around to sending you any traffic.  Or, you might be doing social media and getting all your accounts banned.  These things happen, and when they do, they can be very discouraging.

You have to understand, though, that affiliate marketing is like anything else worth doing.  It takes time and effort to get to where you need to be.  Unless you are exceptionally lucky, you will have setbacks and discouraging days.  Just know that if you keep working at it, you will get past those moments.

If you’re the kind of person who gets discouraged easily, it can be very helpful to have other friends who are doing the same thing you’re doing.  Many online marketing training courses offer forums where you can talk to other members learning the exact same types of marketing, and there are also quite a few free forums with more general affiliate crowds where you can meet others.

It can also help if you try to think of each small failure as a necessary step in getting to success.  Each time something doesn’t work, you’ve actually learned more about what you’re trying to do.  If you’re careful, you can avoid the problems in the future, or use what you’ve learned to further refine your efforts.

Nobody is perfect, and nothing good comes too easily.  Keep working and you’ll find the success you’re aiming for!
