Learn Affiliate Marketing at Your Day Job

learn-affiliate-marketingA lot of people spend tons of money on online marketing courses, but they fail to realize that they could actually learn affiliate marketing at their day jobs.  It takes a bit of luck and some strategy, but it’s absolutely possible to get paid while learning with someone else’s money.

Just as we all advertise products for merchants, there are thousands of merchants and companies out there that need help from in-house employees.  Add that to the number of agencies looking for in-house online marketing help, and you’ve got a serious demand in a subject that colleges don’t really teach yet.

Consider that even the most experienced online marketing experts have just 10-15 years of experience.  Most have more like 1-5 years of experience, though.  What that means is that it doesn’t take much at all to rise to a position of authority.  If you’re even a little bit good at what you do (and you’ll have to be, if you want to work for yourself someday), you will enjoy great benefits and frequent raises.  In some cases, you can even coerce your employers to pay for training courses or networking events that will help you even more.

If you’re going to be stuck in a day job a while longer, you might as well try getting a job in your desired field.  You’ll learn a ton, make great money, and have valuable contacts and insights for when you do branch out on your own.  When you finally do get to the point where you’re working from home, you’ll be prepared for the challenges ahead.

Learn Affiliate Marketing For Free

learn-affiliate-marketingIf you’ve ever seen those $2000 online marketing courses from the gurus, you’ve probably wondered if there is a way to learn affiliate marketing for free.  Luckily, there is.  It’s entirely possible to learn affiliate marketing without spending a dime of your hard-earned money.  You will, however, need a bit of spare time.

  • Get the free guides. Plenty of gurus have free guides that they give out as a teaser to entice you to join their mailing lists.  Just use a junk email address and enjoy.
  • Just try it.  Although this isn’t recommended for paid traffic sources, there are plenty of ways you can get web traffic without spending money on advertising.  Make Squidoo lenses, write articles for Associated Content, or learn about SEO and build a site with a simple pagemaker.  You have nothing to lose but a few of your free evenings.
  • Get a job in online marketing. Companies can’t seem to find enough employees to fill their online marketing departments.  It’s a new field and you don’t need a lot of experience to progress quickly.  The best part is that you get to learn on someone else’s dime.
  • Spy on competitors or sites that interest you.  Look at what they’re doing to drive traffic and then figure out how to apply similar tactics to your own sites.
  • Go to the library.  There are plenty of books on web marketing.  If your library doesn’t have what you’re looking for, they can probably borrow it through an inter-library loan.

Learn Affiliate Marketing: Tricks for Enticing Blog Posts

learn-affiliate-marketingWhen you start to learn affiliate marketing, a lot of people focus on the nuts and bolts of it.  They focus on learning how the networks work, how advertising works, and how to set up the technical side of things.  What a lot of people don’t focus on, though, is the actual marketing.  The simple tips below can go a long way towards improving your copywriting and blog posts.

  1. Use words like “top secret”, “never before revealed”, “important”, “amazing”, and “incredible”.  These power words draw in viewers and make them curious about what you have to say.
  2. Pose a question.  Instead of declaring what you have to say, rephrase it as a question.  Get people to start mentally reaching for an answer.  Once they start thinking about it, they’ll want to read on to see if their thoughts are the same as yours.
  3. Know your purpose.  Are you going for SEO traffic?  If not, don’t make a keyword heavy title.  Instead, go for maximum intrigue.  It’s possible to do both at the same time, but it’s rare.
  4. Use pictures.  Pictures liven up the page and keep people interested.

Is blogging part of your affiliate marketing business plan?  If not, it should be.  I’m not saying that you need to start up a “how to make money online” blog, but nearly all of us could be diversifying our efforts with a good niche blog.  Feel free to share your comments and experiences in the comments!

Learn Affiliate Marketing From Your Competitors

Monday, March 29, 2010

learn-affiliate-marketingWhen people are trying to learn affiliate marketing, they often look to expensive courses and end up spending thousands and thousands of dollars trying to get started.  This a huge mistake.

Don’t get me wrong - affiliate marketing courses can be tremendously helpful when you’re just getting started.  A good course can lay the foundation for everything you will learn as you progress.  Once you have the basics down, though, you need to step away from the courses unless there is a very good reason to purchase another (such as learning about an entirely new discipline within the field).  What a lot of people don’t realize is that they can save thousands of dollars by using their competitors to learn affiliate marketing.

Regardless of what kind of affiliate marketing you want to do, there’s a way to spy on your competitors.

  • If you want to learn more about email marketing that works, sign up for newsletters in the niches you hope to promote.
  • If you want to do SEO, search the phrases you want to rank for, then use Yahoo! Site Explorer to see the backlinks of the people who are already ranking for those phrases.
  • If you want to do PPC, search the phrases you want to bid on and see who is bidding on them and what kind of landing page they’re using.
  • If you want to do PPV marketing, install popular toolbars on your computer and check out what the other marketers are doing.

Keen observation goes a long way.  The next time you’re thinking about purchasing an expensive course, ask yourself if you could learn much of the same simply by observing your peers.  If the answer is no, then by all means, buy the course.  If it’s yes, see what you can dig up before you pull out your wallet.

Learn Affiliate Marketing Everywhere

learn-affiliate-marketingAlthough a lot of people think you need expensive courses and memberships to learn affiliate marketing, there’s a lot to be learned everywhere you look.  Have you ever heard that statistic about how many hundreds or thousands of ads we all see in a given day?  Take a moment to think about that as a budding affiliate marketer.  That means that every day, you have hundreds, if not thousands of opportunities to learn about marketing from some of the top companies in the business.

Even better, you can learn from sources that aren’t ads.  It may not seem immediately obvious, but consider these methods for thinking critically about the way advertisers and marketers connect with their audiences.

  • Watch the magazine and newspaper covers.  A huge amount of thought goes into covers.  What topics resonate with each magazine’s audience?  What are the hopes and fears conveyed on the cover?  What is the demographic for that publication?  And of course, focus on the copy they use to make people pick up the magazine and actually buy.  Words can be powerful.
  • The next time you’re in a restaurant, take a look at the clientele.  Is it a certain demographic?  What kind of decor is used?  Is it typical of the decor for restaurants that appeal to that type of clientele?  Don’t be afraid to start generalizing and picking up on trends.
  • Look at packaging.  Your landing pages are a lot like packaging.  If you notice certain trends for certain types of products or demographics, keep that in mind when you’re making landing pages for those demographics.

The moral of the story is that you should never stop learning.  Everything you do is an affiliate marketing learning opportunity if you’re thinking.

Learn Affiliate Marketing in One Month

learn-affiliate-marketingIt really doesn’t take long to learn affiliate marketing.  If you have basic knowledge of using computers and the internet, it shouldn’t take more than a month to master the basics and start earning commissions.  But where do you start?

First, you should understand the options.  Figure out whether you’ll do your marketing through PPC, SEO, social media, email, CPV, or some other kind of traffic.  If you’re not fully aware of the options, Google each one and figure out which one seems best suited to your skills and investment capital.

Once you do that, you’ll want to find a course in your chosen topic.  Ideally, you should choose one that gives you a money-back guarantee.   That way, if you find that the information is outdated, or that the support is lacking, you can look elsewhere.

In addition to your paid course, you should also seek out supportive blogs or forums on your topic.  These types of sites can offer much more up-to-date information than the average course, and they can also be a good way to get different perspectives on the issues that go along with your chosen advertising method.

By applying yourself diligently to this sequence of actions, you should have no trouble learning the basics of a given affiliate marketing method in less than one month.  While there are always subtleties that will take longer to master, the most important thing is that you start learning now and put those principles into action quickly.  There’s no better teacher than experience, and you can’t get that until you begin.
