Internet Marketing Tools: Google Trends

internet-marketing-tools1When we think of internet marketing tools, we often think of packages like Market Samurai or expensive software like Adobe Photoshop.  If you think outside the box, though, you’ll find that there are thousands of internet marketing tools out there, many of them completely free.  Google Trends is one of those.

Google Trends is useful because it lets you identify highly searched topics long before they show consistent volume in Google’s main search tool.  Instead of reading vast quantities of news and paying attention to pop culture, you can spend 10 minutes with Google Trends to learn what’s hot.

But what good does that do?  What if the topics you see have nothing to do with any of the products you want to promote?  Does that mean that the results are worthless and completely un-monetizable?

Of course not!  Where there’s an audience, there’s a product to be sold.  Imagine this:  Lindsay Lohan keywords are climbing the Google Trends list.  You don’t know what product that might tie in with, but you DO have a basic clue about who’s searching for it.  You can figure out what else that market is interested in, or what that audience needs, and then market that product or service to them.

Becoming a successful affiliate is not just about hard work.  It’s true that you have to work hard (especially initially), but creative use of resources is every bit as important.  By learning to harness unconventional internet marketing tools, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Internet Marketing Tools - Hot Trend for 2010 & Beyond

internet-marketing-toolsUnless you’ve been completely ignoring the affiliate marketing landscape, you’re well aware of the fact that internet marketing tools rule these days.  A lot of people who would never consider an ebook will happily pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for marketing tools.  But why?

If you’re a working affiliate marketer, the amount of time saved by using good tools can be enormous.  If you value your time at $100/hour and a tool saves you 2 hours/week in tedious work, you’re going to value that tool at roughly $800/month.  It doesn’t mean that you’d be willing to spend $800, but it does mean that you will have no trouble justifying $50/month.

When it comes to ebooks, the ROI can be much more vague.  One good tip COULD, in theory, make you a ton of money.  Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t even seem to offer much in the way of original information, so the overall transaction can be very disappointing in many cases.  When you factor in the time it takes to actually read an ebook, it’s easy to see why some people are cutting back in this area.

Have you personally noticed a difference in your buying habits?  Do you get more tools or more ebooks?  Let us know in the comments!

Internet Marketing Tools: Picking a Domain Name

internet-marketing-toolsWhen it comes to internet marketing tools, few are more handy than the ones that help you pick your domain name.  A great many of the “good” domains have been taken at this point, so it’s difficult to come up with something that’s keyword-heavy, memorable, easily spelled, and most importantly, AVAILABLE.  The tools below should help you accomplish that.

  • Thesaurus: This is the most basic tool in your arsenal, but it’s important.  Suppose you want to make a blog about your obsession with chocolate.  Instead of just giving up when “chocolateobsession.com” is already taken, you can use your thesaurus to come up with alternatives like problem, addiction, need, urge, and so on.  With enough synonyms, you’re bound to find something that you like.
  • Dotomator: This site lets you use multiple columns and enter words you’d consider pairing.  In the previous example, you might put words like chocolate, choco, candy, and sweets in the first column.  In the second column, you’d use words like obsession, problem, fanatic, etc.   The site would then try every possible combination and tell you which ones were available for registration.
  • Apt Domain: This site is similar to Dotomator, except that it lets you put all the words in the same column.  This is better if you don’t care about the specific order of the words in your domain.
  • Expiring Domain List: This is available through a number of registrars, and it simply lets you browse domains that are about to expire.  Often, you’ll find hidden gems that you can snatch up immediately when owners forget about them.

Do you know of any other good domain-finding tools?  Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Internet Marketing Tools for Twitter

internet-marketing-toolsIn internet marketing, tools definitely make things easier.  That’s doubly true for internet marketers who use Twitter in their marketing.  It can be extremely time-consuming to sit and click endlessly, hoping a good percentage of users will follow you back.  Then you have to delete everyone who didn’t follow you, and when that’s done, you have to find another group of people who might be interested in your topic so you can start the process all over again.  It’s enough to make anyone crazy.

So, if you’re planning on working with Twitter in your affiliate marketing efforts, I would strongly recommend that you look into at least one tool to simplify your most common tasks.

  • Hummingbird - A popular autofollow tool.  This one also comes packaged with Anteater, a VERY useful tool for bulk deleting the auto-generated DMs that so many Twitter users send.
  • Social Oomph - This is a good tool for accounts geared towards branding efforts.  It’s not as good as some other tools for speed.
  • Twitter Karma - Helps you figure out who is following you and who isn’t.  Unfortunately, Twitter no longer allows it to use the bulk unfollow feature, but it’s still helpful for everything else.

Have you used any tools for building your followers quickly?  If so, let us know more about what worked well for you.

Conferences - Highly Effective Internet Marketing Tools

internet-marketing-toolsIf you’ve never been to an affiliate conference, you probably don’t realize what effective internet marketing tools they can be.  Shows like ad:tech, PubCon, LeadsCon, and Affiliate Summit draw thousands of attendees, all of which play some role in the internet marketing industry.  In fact, it’s virtually impossible to find industry leaders who haven’t been to quite a few of these kinds of conferences.

Even if you’re not earning a lot just yet, it’s a good idea to get to a conference as soon as possible.  Consider the benefits:

  • You get to mingle with others who are in the position you want to be in.
  • Networks host great parties.
  • You find new tools and traffic sources before other affiliates.
  • You get out of the house.
  • You get inspired.
  • You can ask for clarification on things that confused you before.
  • People take you more seriously because they see you in person.

A lot of people look at conferences and they see the insanely high price tags of buying the top conference pass.  Ignore that.  Unless you have a lot of money to blow, you’re going to be better off with the free (or almost free) conference/expo pass that lets you get out onto the exhibit floor but not attend most of the sessions.  The real value is going to be in your casual interactions, not the corporate-dominated speeches that people are paying for.

So next time you see a conference advertisement, consider going.  Find out where the parties are being held, brush up on your social skills, and have a great time with it!

Do You Need Expensive Internet Marketing Tools?

internet-marketing-toolsIt seems like you can’t go a single day without hearing about the latest and greatest internet marketing tools that will turn your business around overnight.  There are even students who have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars purchasing system after system and tool after tool, only to find that they haven’t really helped them.

All that aside, there are a huge number of internet marketing tools that are actually extremely useful, and which have the potential to help you get extremely wealthy.  So why are so many people having trouble with the tools they buy?  The top reason is because they buy expensive tools before they’re actually in a position to make money with them.

Suppose you purchased Google Cash Detective during the big launch last spring.  It was around $2000, and many of the students who purchased it were not making a profit at all.  In fact, after the purchase, some students had less than $500 in their advertising budget for actually using the product.

To be brutally honest, there is no paid tool that you actually need to make a profit online.  There are tools to make it easier, and tools to improve the ROI of what you’re doing, but if you can’t make a profit without a tool, there’s a good chance that it’s not going to do what you’re hoping.

What does that mean?  It means that you need to get in the trenches and start working hard and making some money before you invest in a tool.  Education is different - if you need more knowledge on a particular topic, be smart and invest if you are fairly certain it will give you the knowledge you’re seeking.  Hold off on the tools, though, until you have a bit of experience in the area it serves.  Anything else is like putting a high-powered chainsaw in the hands of someone who can’t even use a simple handsaw.  It’s too expensive and it won’t be used to it’s fullest potential.
