The New Affiliate: Internet Marketing Beginnings

affiliate-internet-marketingTo the new affiliate, internet marketing is a hugely daunting new undertaking.  You have to learn about the industry itself.  You have to learn the technical side of things.  You have to be business owner, marketer, copywriter, and tech experts (in most cases, anyway).  It can be hard to know where to start and what to focus on, but the tips below should help you get started.

  • Avoid the technical as much as possible. If possible, start out by creating your website on a free service like Blogger.com or Squidoo.  You have less ability to customize, but it will also help you avoid the technical roadblocks that stop so many new affiliates.  You don’t have to own a website to make money.  If you DO decide that you want a website, go with a simple shared hosting plan and use Wordpress or another template-based site manager to keep things easy.  You can always make it more complex later once you’re already making money.
  • Just do it. You’re going to screw up - many times, actually.  We all do.  The point is to get started and not let yourself get weighed down by reading and deliberating.  If you’re using paid traffic, set a low daily budget and keep an eye on what’s happening.  If you’re using free traffic, you don’t have to worry nearly as much.
  • Sign up with just one or two networks.  Don’t worry if you can’t get accepted at every network under the sun.  You only need one network to make money.  There’s no sense in wasting a lot of time learning the interfaces of every network at this point in time.

It’s tough getting started, but the key is not to get too discouraged or scared.  If you can conquer your own personal issues, chances are good that you’ll be successful.

The Smart Affiliate: Internet Marketing for the Long Haul

affiliate-internet-marketingTo the average affiliate, internet marketing is about fast profits, regardless of how short-term the results may be.  That’s exactly why the FTC has been jumping in to police flogs, and why Google and Facebook are making it increasingly difficult to use their advertising platforms.  Most affiliates just aren’t in it to generate quality, long-term results.

That said, there’s a lot of money to be made (and gray hairs to be saved) in sticking with a long-term strategy in your affiliate marketing efforts.  Next time you want to tackle a niche, don’t think of the fastest way to arbitrage traffic.  Instead, think of how you could build a serious resource that would actually impress or help people.  If you feel like you need to hide your site from human reviewers or resort to strange techniques to prevent bans, you’re doing it wrong.  The point here is to STOP feeling like you’re earning on borrowed time.

But what if your site doesn’t make much money?  What if you put in all that time and you’re still not earning much?  Here’s the beauty of it - you can ask for help!  With a lot of affiliate marketing, it’s scary to do that.  Someone could rip off your landing page or steal your keywords.  When you create a complex, valuable site, though, you put in a LOT of effort.  Even if you show it to an entire forum and ask for suggestions, the odds of anyone copying you are extremely slim (especially since you’re saying it isn’t making money yet!)  Even better, your first-mover advantage means that you’re already established in the niche, and competitors would have to work much harder to overtake your progress.  You can’t say that about most forms of affiliate marketing.  Building a quality site is so much more than just matching traffic to the advertiser.

I’m not saying you should never go for the quick money - but if you want a long-term, sustainable business, you should consider putting a couple of high quality projects on your to-do list.

Have you ever taken this approach?  How did it work out for you?  Let us know in the comments.

Affiliate / Internet Marketing Certification

affiliate-internet-marketing1The affiliate community has been abuzz lately with the advent of a new business - Affilicert, providing affiliate internet marketing certification.  The idea is that Affilicert checks out affiliates (who pay) and then certifies those who are legitimate and serious.  Although some people have positive opinions, the overwhelming majority of responses have been highly negative.  But why?  At first glance, the problem with this system may not be obvious.

The issue today is not that affiliate networks don’t have enough affiliates.  In fact, many of them have more than they can handle.  With affiliate marketing, as with most things, the 80/20 rule is in effect.  80% of results come from a mere 20% of total affiliates.  The rest either don’t do much at all, or they consume more resources than they produce.  Networks aren’t looking for raw numbers - they’re looking for producers.

The other issue is that getting accepted by networks isn’t usually a problem for serious affiliates.  It’s definitely getting harder, but if a newbie is willing to put in a bit of effort, they can usually get accepted by at least one good affiliate network where they can get started.  They may not get accepted at a top-tier networks like Azoogle or Clickbooth, but they should have no trouble getting on at a smaller network if they are honest and forthcoming about their intentions.

What do you think about the idea behind Affilicert?  Good idea?  Crazy?  Would you pay to be evaluated by a company like Affilicert, if you thought it could help you get approved at networks?

New Affiliate? Internet Marketing Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating

affiliate-internet-marketingTo a new affiliate, internet marketing can seem incredibly complicated or even impossible to learn.  Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way.  Unless you’re already very familiar with computers and marketing, it will still be a little tough, but there are ways to make the entire process much easier.

  • Choose a specialty and stick with it. Until you have a very solid understanding of your specialization, don’t try to branch out and learn everything.  If you want to do SEO and build free traffic, focus on that.  If you want to do social media, pick a couple of sites and really learn what it takes to succeed there.  Even if you’re not successful, you’ll be simplifying the process of finding what you’re good at.
  • Find a mentor. If you can afford to pay for help from a successful mentor, that’s ideal.  Remember, too, that you’re probably going to need to pay that person for his or her time, not some “percentage of your success after coaching”.  People want to know that you’re serious and successful affiliate get those kinds of offers all the time.  If you don’t have the funds to hire help, get active in a forum of affiliates or find a good coaching forum.  People don’t necessarily have to be successful to help out with a few questions and keep you motivated.
  • Purchase a course in your specialization.  Note that I didn’t say you should buy 20 courses on all different types of internet marketing.  Just figure out the top 1 or 2 courses or ebooks in your chosen area and then read them.
  • Learn to spy on your competition.  Spying on competitors can give you a great idea of what’s working.  Just make sure that you don’t end up spending all your time looking and not enough time actually taking action.

Above all, try not to get discouraged.  It can be extremely frustrating to teach yourself affiliate marketing, especially when your friends and family have no idea what you’re doing on the computer.  It’s all worth it, though, when the checks start showing up in your mailbox.

Even thought it uses many of the same techniques and tools, affiliate internet marketing is very different from other forms of internet marketing.  That’s because affiliate marketers are working on behalf of merchants who already have their own sites, and by necessity, their margins are virtually always lower than what the merchant would earn by promoting his or her products alone.

Affiliate marketing is also different because there is a strong incentive for affiliates to link directly to the merchant or create intermediary pages with minimal content.  Because of that, many ad networks, social media sites, and search engines make efforts to identify and remove affiliates from their systems.  They feel that affiliate sites, on average, offer very little value to the user.

Because affiliates are often perceived as lower value sites, and because affiliate typically receive lower commissions, some might even wonder why so many people bother.  Affiliate marketing is still an exceptionally good way to make money without the time, effort, and capital required to build your own business.  If you fail in one area, you have the luxury of moving on without having invested too much of your own time and money.  If something does well, you always reserve the option of producing your own product later if you want to increase your margins.

Flexibility is the key benefit of affiliate marketing, and it’s the main reason that so many affiliates prefer it to any other kind of internet marketing.  There’s no need to worry about customer service, no need to invest heavily, and no need to worry about changing trends killing your business overnight.  If that’s not enough to get you fired up and ready to dive into your affiliate efforts, you’re in the wrong field.

Why Affiliate Marketing Makes a Good Career

affiliate-marketingAll too often, I hear people saying that affiliate marketing isn’t a good career.  “It’s unstable,” they say.  They complain that you can make a ton one day and nothing the next.  And for some affiliate marketers, that’s true.  It doesn’t have to be, though.

Affiliate marketing can actually give you a remarkably stable career if you do things right.  Below, I’ve laid out some guidelines to making a steady income from affiliate marketing.

  • When you’re getting started, keep your focus narrow so you can find success more quickly.  Once you’ve started making money, though, begin to diversify your earnings.  If you earn a lot on diet products, try diversifying with something else like auto loans or holiday gifts.  If you have steady earnings in multiple categories (even if it’s not a ton), your income will be more stable.
  • Work with companies you can trust, and never let a company owe you more money than you can afford to lose.  Even established companies have been known to skip out on the bill if their advertiser doesn’t pay them.  You can’t fully avoid that possibility, but you can make sure  no one ever owes you too much.
  • Build quality sites.  Quick landing pages are great, but every affiliate should have at least one or two quality sites up their sleeve.  Try to build at least one good site with real content.  Guidelines are getting tighter all over the place, so it never hurts to have one extremely high quality site waiting in the wings if your others should get banned.

As you can see, affiliate marketing is not an inherently unstable career.  Just like anything, there are choices you can make to put yourself in a more secure place - you just have to have the discipline to do it.
