earn-extra-moneyDo you think affiliate marketing is for you? In this rough economy, many people are turning to affiliate marketing as a means of bringing in extra income. It is possible to grow a successful internet affiliate marketing business, but it takes some know-how and a lot of hard work.

There are several philosophies when it comes to learning affiliate marketing. If you’re already internet and computer savvy, and have a vast knowledge of a niche market, than you may want to learn on the job. You could also take the time to look at online training resources from online forums, weblogs, podcasts, and specialty websites. There are companies that sell training courses, but make sure you do your homework beforehand; affiliate marketing lacks industry standards for training and certification, so beware of self-proclaimed gurus.

Defining Affiliate Marketing

connecting-with-businessesMany people are still baffled by the concept of affiliate marketing. They’ve probably heard the term used in conversation, but have just nodded along and pretended to understand. If you’re one of those people, have no fear because all will be explained.

What is affiliate marketing? To put it simply affiliate marketing is the business of connecting consumers to businesses. An affiliate marketer is the middle man of the internet era. Let’s pretend you want to buy a dog bed. The first thing you would probably do is type ‘dog bed’ into a search engine. You end up clicking on a link that is actually my affiliate marketing website that reviews several types of dog beds. You read through some of the reviews and then you click a link taking you to the website of the dog bed you wish to purchase. When you buy the bed, which you found through my website, I earn a commission on that sale. Voila! Affiliate marketing in a nut shell.

Building Upon a Great Idea

affiliateMost successful home-based business opportunities prosper as a result of an entrepreneur’s hard work and dedication. Inventiveness is not a prerequisite, however. In fact, it’s often better to capitalize on a preexisting idea by marketing the product or service to an untapped demographic. This is the basic philosophy behind every successful franchise. The man who operates your local McDonald’s didn’t invent the hamburger, after all.

Franchising opportunities are not limited to fast-food chains. If you’re thinking about starting a franchise of your own, begin by selecting an industry with potential for growth. In effect, this means looking online for new technologies and services that have not yet reached peak profitability. The internet has opened the door for more budding entrepreneurs to take advantage of large company’s brand name recognition through affiliate marketing training. Through these programs, you earn money for helping drive business to well-established corporations. Remember to be selective, but don’t be afraid to take a few risks if you believe the reward is worth it.

wwwAs an entrepreneur, you need to be a jack of all trades. In the early stages of business development, an upstart company requires long hours and hard work from its founder. If the business proves successful, you can allocate some of your newfound profits toward hiring more staff and thus alleviating your share of the burden. But what if you’re not successful? What if you stretch yourself too thin?

An internet marketing system takes these possibilities right out of the equation, allowing you to focus on one simple task: marketing your business to an untapped demographic. Use your imagination and business-savvy wits to come up with innovative ways to increase exposure. The Internet is overflowing with social networks, forums and message boards where you can spread the word about your products or services.

Growing a Business from the Ground Up

affiliateIt’s no secret that the most difficult part of owning a business – either a brick-and-mortar store or an online version – is getting off the ground. There are two distinct reasons why this is so. For starters, there’s a surplus of work to be done and a shortage of employees to handle that load. In many cases, a single individual is expected to handle the operations of an entire business. Only when the endeavor starts to flourish will more employees be hired.

The other issue is that of visibility. If a business is not marketed in a smart, cost-effective way, it will get nowhere fast. That’s why working with an affiliate is a one of the best ways to make extra money. Affiliate online marketing takes the burden off of you, allowing you to focus on one aspect of the business: marketing. Think of all that you could accomplish if you didn’t have to worry about inventory and logistics.

Make Marketing Your Top Business Priority

marketingAs an entrepreneur, you can only do so much for your business. When most businesses are getting off the ground, there’s only enough seed money to pay a single employee. If you are operating as your company’s sole employee, it’s time to learn to prioritize. That way you can focus on the aspects of your business that lie within your control. Sit down at a table and begin drawing up a business plan.

It stands to reason that you can only sell products or services if people know you exist. For that reason, developing an internet marketing program for your business should be near the top of your list. You can find cutting-edge ways to spread the word online – on social-networking sites, message boards and chat rooms. By partnering with an affiliate marketing site that has already proven to be successful, you increase the odds of finding success in your own right.

Internet Marketing Tools: Google Trends

internet-marketing-tools1When we think of internet marketing tools, we often think of packages like Market Samurai or expensive software like Adobe Photoshop.  If you think outside the box, though, you’ll find that there are thousands of internet marketing tools out there, many of them completely free.  Google Trends is one of those.

Google Trends is useful because it lets you identify highly searched topics long before they show consistent volume in Google’s main search tool.  Instead of reading vast quantities of news and paying attention to pop culture, you can spend 10 minutes with Google Trends to learn what’s hot.

But what good does that do?  What if the topics you see have nothing to do with any of the products you want to promote?  Does that mean that the results are worthless and completely un-monetizable?

Of course not!  Where there’s an audience, there’s a product to be sold.  Imagine this:  Lindsay Lohan keywords are climbing the Google Trends list.  You don’t know what product that might tie in with, but you DO have a basic clue about who’s searching for it.  You can figure out what else that market is interested in, or what that audience needs, and then market that product or service to them.

Becoming a successful affiliate is not just about hard work.  It’s true that you have to work hard (especially initially), but creative use of resources is every bit as important.  By learning to harness unconventional internet marketing tools, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Bad Internet Marketing Ideas

internet-marketing-ideasThere are a lot of bad internet marketing ideas out there.  Sadly, the vast majority of independent internet marketers will never make any significant amount of money.  These two facts are not coincidences.  To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of some of the worst internet marketing advice you could possibly get.  Are you making any of these mistakes?

-If something doesn’t work immediately, switch to something else.  You have to give something a fair shot before moving on, or you’ll never find anything that works for you.  Even if it’s a good natural fit for you, remember that there’s always a learning curve.

-Don’t diversify.  Stick with what works and make a killing.  Even though it’s important not to spread yourself too thin or jump around from method to method, it’s also a good idea to diversify once you build one successful income stream.  It keeps your income much more stable.

-Don’t tell your affiliate manager what you’re doing.  It’s true that there have been cases of affiliate managers stealing campaigns, but this is such a small minority that it’s not worth getting too worried about except in the most extreme cases.  In most cases, affiliate managers are people who want to help you maximize your income, not steal it.  It might not make sense, but for the most part they’re people who value the security of a day job, or who lack the motivation (or maybe even the skill) to take your campaign and have similar success.  Being too secretive, however, can ensure that you don’t get valuable insights from your AM or the advertiser.

-Skip the industry events.  Although some people would argue that the money is better spent on testing or savings, industry events let you make valuable real world contacts in an industry where few people know each other in real life.  They also have a huge motivational benefit.  When you see what’s really possible, you’ll go home with a new level of determination.

What kind of bad advice have you gotten?  Did you listen to it?  Share in the comments!

Internet Marketing Tools – Hot Trend for 2010 & Beyond

internet-marketing-toolsUnless you’ve been completely ignoring the affiliate marketing landscape, you’re well aware of the fact that internet marketing tools rule these days.  A lot of people who would never consider an ebook will happily pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for marketing tools.  But why?

If you’re a working affiliate marketer, the amount of time saved by using good tools can be enormous.  If you value your time at $100/hour and a tool saves you 2 hours/week in tedious work, you’re going to value that tool at roughly $800/month.  It doesn’t mean that you’d be willing to spend $800, but it does mean that you will have no trouble justifying $50/month.

When it comes to ebooks, the ROI can be much more vague.  One good tip COULD, in theory, make you a ton of money.  Unfortunately, a lot of them don’t even seem to offer much in the way of original information, so the overall transaction can be very disappointing in many cases.  When you factor in the time it takes to actually read an ebook, it’s easy to see why some people are cutting back in this area.

Have you personally noticed a difference in your buying habits?  Do you get more tools or more ebooks?  Let us know in the comments!
